NFL game suspended as player falls on field, according to Damar Hamlin
American football star Damar Hamlin collapsed during a primetime US National Football League game and is now in critical condition.
The 24-year-old Buffalo Bills player tripped over an opponent during the opening period of a game against the Cincinnati Bengals and fell to the ground.
Before being transferred to a nearby hospital, he received approximately 30 minutes of on-field medical care.
About an hour after the incident, the NFL decided to call the game off for the evening.
As the NFL season moves closer to its dramatic play-off stages, the emergency triggered an outpouring of well-wishes for Hamlin and brought attention back to the dangers of America's most popular sport.
In the stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, Hamlin was hitting Bengals receiver Tee Higgins when it looked that Higgins' helmet struck Hamlin in the chest. He got to his feet, then tripped and landed on his back.
As CPR and oxygen were administered to Hamlin by medical personnel, players from both teams crowded around him. Many were observed bowing in prayer, many were seen to be clearly upset, and some were seen to be crying.
The Cincinnati audience was silent during the ordeal, and television coverage frequently cut away from the action on the field.
Hamlin's agent, Jordon Rooney, posted on Twitter: "His vital signs have returned to normal, and he has been put to sleep so that a breathing tube may be placed down his throat. They are testing right now. As soon as we have them, we will offer updates."
NFL games are rarely called off due to injuries, so the fact that the action had stopped was shocking and serious, according to the commentators.
The matchup between the two teams, who are two of the top Super Bowl hopefuls this year, will take place on a Monday night in prime time during the last week of the NFL's regular season.
In a statement, the league's players association stated: "Players from the Bengals and Bills as well as the NFL have been in contact with us. At this point, just Damar's health and wellbeing are important."

Before being selected by the Bills in the NFL draft of 2021, Hamlin, a native of McKees Rock, Pennsylvania, excelled at the University of Pittsburgh.
He was a safety who mostly filled in as a reserve for the Bills last season, but he started for them in 2022.
Additionally, he has received recognition for organizing yearly Christmas toy drives in his hometown ever since he was an amateur athlete.
After Hamlin's collapse on Monday, a GoFundMe page for the toy drive was reshared and has since raised almost $1 million.
Greetings have also flooded in from a wide range of sources.
LeBron James, a basketball player, said: "It was horrific to witness, and I'm hoping for the best for that young person. I love football and the NFL, so you never want to see something like that occur."
In every sport, "player safety is always the most crucial," he continued.
Defensive end JJ Watt of the Arizona Cardinals tweeted: "Please, just be fine. Ryan Clark, a former safety for the Pittsburgh Steelers, said on ESPN's SportsCenter: "This isn't about a football player, this is about a human. Please be okay."
Kathy Hochul, governor of New York, said: "wishing Damar Hamlin well. Our thoughts are with his family, close friends, and the Buffalo Bills organization as a whole."
A Bills supporter who was present at the time, Bruce Sharpe, described it as "devastating."
"There was complete silence. You know you don't want to witness something like that, even Bengals supporters, "added he. "We just hope everything works out,"
