large-scale military incursion by China, according to Taiwan
According to information from Taiwan's defense ministry, China is conducting one of its largest air and maritime incursions to date near the island.
According to the report, 71 Chinese aircraft, including fighter jets and drones, had flown inside Taiwan's alleged air defense identification zone.
Taiwan is a self-governing island, but China regards it as a separatist province that it will eventually unite.
In recent months, tensions between the two sides have progressively risen.

The most senior US official to visit Taiwan in 25 years, Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, visited the island in August, angering Beijing.
Following that visit, China held its largest-ever military drills in the waters surrounding Taiwan and also halted some trade with the island as a response.
Joseph Wu, Taiwan's foreign minister, criticized China's action at the time as being extremely aggressive. China has never indicated that it would refrain from using force to annex Taiwan.
The so-called middle line, an informal barrier between the two sides inside the air defence zone, was crossed by 43 Chinese aircraft, according to Taiwan's defense ministry on Monday.
In reaction to what it claimed were provocations from the US and the island of Taiwan, China claimed to have carried out "strike drills" surrounding Taiwan on Sunday.
Regarding the Taiwan problem, Washington has always had to tread carefully diplomatically.
As a cornerstone of its relationship with Beijing, it upholds the One-China policy. By adhering to this policy, the US recognizes that there is only one legitimate government in China and establishes diplomatic ties with Beijing as opposed to Taiwan.
The Taiwan Relations Act, which mandates that the US furnish the island with the ability to defend itself, also mandates that it maintain close ties with Taiwan and sell weaponry to it.
