England World Cup champion and Fulham right-back George Cohen passes away at the age of 83
England World Cup champion George Cohen passed away at the age of 83.
The 1966 tournament's right-back played in each of the six games without missing a beat, serving as vice-captain in the 4-2 victory over West Germany in the Wembley final.
Cohen earned 37 England caps and played his whole club career for Fulham.
"Very sad to hear my buddy and England teammate has passed away," said Sir Geoff Hurst, one of the two XI players still alive—the other being Sir Bobby Charlton—from the starting lineup for the championship game.
"Without exception, everyone always praised George for being such a charming man. My sincere condolences go out to George's wife Daphne and family. He will be sorely missed," Hurst continued on Twitter.
"Everyone at Fulham Football Club is very saddened to learn of the passing of one of our finest ever players - and gentlemen," the club that made the announcement of Cohen's death, said.
We are all thinking of George's devoted wife of more than 60 years, Daphne, his sons Anthony and Andrew, his grandchildren, his extended family, and his countless friends.
Cohen had a part in each match in England's victorious World Cup run.
He was one of five players from the 1966 team to get the MBE in 2000 as a result of a media push to acknowledge their accomplishment with that of his contemporaries.
