Wildcards Rinky Hijikata and Jason Kubler win the doubles competition at the Australian Open in 2023.
Hugo Nys and Jan Zielinski were defeated by Australian wildcards Rinky Hijikata and Jason Kubler in the men's doubles final of the Australian Open.
On Rod Laver Arena, Hijikata and Kubler triumphed 6-4 7-6 (7-4) in front of a boisterous home crowd.
The two, who hadn't previously played together, defeated seven top-20 ranked pairs to advance to the championship match.
Kubler added, "I don't know what to say - it's a pleasant surprise.
Hijikata and Kubler outclassed their rivals, who are doubles experts but were playing in their first Grand Slam final.
They had previously defeated top seeds Wesley Koolhof of the Netherlands and Neal Skupski of Great Britain in the quarterfinals.
They succeed fellow countrymen Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis as Melbourne's doubles champions.
When Rinky invited me to play, "I wasn't sure if I was going to," Kubler admitted. "We received the prize two weeks after that."
Hijikata continued, "It has been absurd. I've never had anything like this before.
Kubs, I'm very happy that you agreed to play with me.
